Morrisons unveils plans for 5,000 new jobs

Morrisons - Britain’s fourth biggest supermarket - today announced plans to create 5,000 new jobs in 2009 as part of its expansion programme.

While the locations of the fresh positions have not yet been confirmed, Morrisons said 18,000 staff members will be working towards qualifications under its Fresh Food Academy initiative.

Many of the new jobs are on its Market Street counters and include the areas of bakery, fishmongery and butchery.

Group HR director Norman Pickavance said: “Working at Morrisons is not just a job, we’re providing people with real careers.

“Even in these challenging economic conditions, Morrisons is committed to hiring and training new people to keep retail as the engine room of the economy and support our continuing growth.”

Nielsen last week said Morrisons had a sussessful Christmas, with sales up 9.1% in the 12 weeks to 27 December.

Qualifications that can be gained by Morrisons staff include NVQs in retail, a Retail Certificate leading to Technical Skills and apprenticeships.

The announcement comes after Sainsbury’s posted strong sales figures last week and revealed it will be opening 4,000 positions.
