Carphone Warehouse agrees to sell Virgin Products instore

Carphone Warehouse  has agreed a deal to sell Virgin Media’s broadband, digital TV, home phone and mobile services in its retail stores. It is the first time that Carphone Warehouse has offered a broadband fixed-line package from a rival supplier to its own TalkTalk service.

Speaking to The Telegraph, acting chief executive of Virgin Media Neil Berkett said: “By extending our product portfolio in-store and making it simple and easy for customers to sign up, we’re hoping Virgin Media will be at the top of shopping lists”.

The deal is part of a strategy by CW to expand its products offer in stores and persuade customers to buy gadgets that connect their laptops, PCs, stereos and games consoles wirelessly.
Additionally, the retailer is setting up The Broadband Shop instore – an area offering a choice of mobile broadband services from Orange, 3, T-Mobile and fixed line from Virgin Media, TalkTalk and AOL Broadband, also owned by Carphone.

Launching the new campaign is a special offer of a free laptop for the first 160,000 who sign up to a £19.99 two-year contract with AOL. The retailer said it had more than 50,000 pre-registrations since the offer was announced and has since ordered 60,000 more laptops, taking the total to 160,000.

Chief executive Charles Dunstone said: “Our research has shown that for people over 14, having a laptop is becoming more important than having a mobile phone. And they don’t want to wrestle with their siblings and their parents to look at websites like Facebook or YouTube”.
