M&S shareholder backs Sir David Michels to replace Sir Stuart Rose

Marks & Spencer shareholder the Local Authority Pension Fund Forum (LAPFF) is backing Sir David Michels to replace Sir Stuart Rose as the retailer’s chairman.

Earlier this week Marks & Spencer announced it will be closing 27 stores after posting a 7.1% sales drop, meaning over 1,200 jobs will be lost.
The firm said 25 Simply Food stores are to close in a bid to reduce operating costs. They are based at:

M&S drive highlights plastic bag success

Marks & Spencer is today launching an in-store ad campaign to highlight the success to date of its scheme to charge for plastic bags.
Window displays in more than 150 stores will reveal that customers of the retailer have reduced carrier bag usage by 80 per cent, saving 100 million carrier bags from landfill sites.

M&S profits break £1bn barrier

Results better than expected given tough trading conditions.
Pre-tax profit for the 52 weeks to 29 March rocketed by 20.5 per cent to £1.13bn. Sales rose by 5% to £9bn, aided by new space in the UK. International sales grew by 16.8%.A 6.8% increse in food sales boosted a fourth quarter UK sales rise of 3.7%.
